There is an order and a logic to the patterns on this magnificent vessel, but they are not rigidly observed. Some straight lines are curved, and the checkered central motifs vary greatly in size. It is as if the artist understood that perfection is predictable and it is the flaws, the little surprises--in decoration as in life--that hold our attention.
