In the valleys of Northern Ghana, the remains of a mysterious vanished culture have been emerging from ancient burial mounds. As in many ancient civilizations in both the old and new worlds, the burials are accompanied by terracotta sculptures that reveal much about the people who created them. The bold expressionism and apprecation for the human form that characterizes these works is unique in the canon of African art. This powerful piece depicts a seated man, nude save for a necklace and a belt. This lack of costume in no way detracts from his impressive dignity, for he seems regal as a tribal king. His hands are held open at his sides, which in many cultures indicates prayer. It is his expression that most holds our attention: wide-eyed with open mouth, as if in awe of unseen powers greater than his own. In his presence we are reminded of two worlds: the realm of the spirits and the forgotten civilization that created this remarkable work.
