The power of a mask to transfigure and transform never ceases to amaze us, especially when it has such a forceful presence as this powerful mask. Probably used by a member of one of the many societies governing the social life of a tribe, this mask speaks with an intensity that is almost audible, as if we can hear the drums beat and see the dust fly as a dancer swirls about before a captivated audience. Masks have for centuries been used as a physical medium between the “real” physical world and the supernatural, allowing spirits a means to communicate with the living. They also serve to hide the identity of the wearer, and allow him to become someone else. The riveting eyes and slightly parted mouth gives the impression it is about to speak, to convey a message from a benevolent ancestor who is watching over the fortunes of his people. Through the ritual of dance and the skill of a talented sculptor, the past is kept alive in this mask that truly transcends time.
