The lion is a symbol of strength and ferocity. The largest of the cat family, this animal is known as the “king of the beasts.” They are equally feared and respected for their power, speed, and intimidating growl. Kings and rulers have associated themselves with this noble creature since the earliest days of history. Perhaps this sculpture is too a royal symbol. Considering the value of the metal alone, this work is a prized treasure that could only have been commissioned by a wealthy member of the Baule elite. The details on this sculpture are charming, from the pointed elbows of the cat’s sinuous limbs to the spiraling curled ends of its mane. A disproportion emphasis is placed on its head, and more specifically on the sharp fangs and pointed ears. The almond-shaped eyes are typical of Baule art and the whiskers radiating from its mouth adds a touch of realism. On the other end, the long, curving tail helps to balance out the weight of the head. Although this lion appears ferocious, we are not intimidated. The inherent charm of the work subdues any fear that might otherwise overcome us.
