Occupying the area now inhabited by the Dogon, the ancient people of Djenne are known only through archaeological remains and legends. The body of this elegant vessel is gourd-like in shape having a long neck ridged at the base and an everted lip. A rich red slip is characteristic of some Djenne terracotta sculptures, and is particularly lovely. Though no bones have been found alongside the various artifacts, some vases containing rice and millet may have been receptacles for offerings. This vessel may simply have been a household item used for holding liquid. It seems a product of nature in its refined simplicity, yet possessing the inimitable quality of Djenne potters.
