The fetish figure is a crucial part of the art of the Congo and their beauty is only a part of their power. Made out of a very smooth wood, he stands on a pedestal without any decoration or ornamentation. The arms end at the elbow, yet the rest of the body is anatomically correct. Due to its function as a fetish figure, the top of the head has been worn and lost the brilliant polish that the rest of the figure has. It is here that the main part of the ritual took place.
To the people of the Congo, this style of figure had a tremendous amount of power, yet to us we are able to envision this power in a different way, yet it is no less powerful or beautiful to us.
