It has been said of Nasca art that; "the coloring of Nasca ware and the sensitivity it displays in the harmony of ornamentation and form are unmatched at any period, anywhere in the world." (Ferdinand Anton, "The Art of Ancient Peru"). An example of this can be seen is this very charming vessel, which was probably made as a funerary gift. The artists during this period expressed special interest in depicting foxes and birds rendered in highly abstract form. The painting of this animal (fox or perhaps raccoon), may in fact be a representation of a musician in an animal costume, holding two objects in each hand which may have been used in music making. Nasca artists preferred symbolism over naturalism, but without sacrificing individuality and vivid expression. The body of the vessel is slightly squared with marginal bulging at the shoulders. The head tapers to a conical shape resembling a type of hat. Most delightful are the wonderful eyes watching us with great curiosity, surrounded by an interesting black design. To see and hold this vessel takes us back to a culture that has left a legacy of lovely and mysterious art.
