Ceremonial swords, whether used by Obas (kings) or high ranking religious leaders, tend to have a decidedly floral aspect in their decoration. This sword is fashioned in a shape resembling a palm leaf, with its triangular end curving inwards almost to a vertical line, then widening to form the body of the blade, before narrowing to the tip. Embossed studs form a group of triangles in varying sizes, divided by a flattened bar on both sides which resembles a stalk. The wooden handle is decorated by criss-cross lines at right angles, with a series of three horizontal lines in the center. A sword such as this one may well have been held by a king, as a symbol of his earthly power.
