Wife of Emperor Marcos Aurelius 161 - 180 A.D.

Annia Galeria Faustina was the younger daughter of Antoninus Pius and the elder Faustina. Though originally betrothed to L. Verus, upon the death of Emperor Hadrian and the accession to the imperial throne of her father, Faustina was given instead to Marcus Aurelius, the nephew of her mother. They were married in 145 A.D. when she was about 15. A daughter was born .two years later, the first of at least a dozen children including the future Emperor Commodus. Despite their marriage having been arranged for political reasons, Marcus was devoted to Faustina, giving her the title 'mother of the camp' in 174 A.D. and deifying her after her death. On this fine denarius she is depicted as a young women, her hair done in a tightly woven fashion with a bun. She is portrayed as a dignified woman born to the nobility.
