This splendid rock crystal libation cup has been carved in the shape of a pouch with two monkey climbing over the walls of the vessel. The rock crystal has been carved so skilfully that the material gives the illusion of being soft, as the neck of the vase gently bends and folds due to the light pressure of a decorative ribbon, resulting in a piece with an incredible plasticity.

Gemstone and hardstones carving is one of China's most ancient and important art forms. It is a craft which has very deep and long roots in Chinese history and tradition. Notably, rock crystal was a symbol of purity, due to its natural brilliance and fragility and it was treasured in the same way of jade. The carving of rock crystal necessitated of very strong manufacturing and artistic skills, and this piece is an excellent example of the mastery of the Chinese artisans during the Qing Dynasty.
