Gemstone and hardstones carving is one of China's most ancient and important art forms. It is a craft which has very deep and long roots in Chinese history and tradition. Notably, rock crystal was a symbol of purity, due to its natural brilliance and fragility and it was treasured in the same way of jade. The carving of rock crystal necessitated of very strong manufacturing and artistic skills, and this piece is an excellent example of the mastery of the Chinese artisans during the Qing Dynasty.
