This is an outstanding example of a carved rock crystal libation cup with handles in the shape of mystical beasts. The beasts are represented in the act of clambering up to the rim and are depicted with an impressive amount of details both carved in low relief and incised. The body of the cup is also finely decorated with waves motifs in relief as well as geometrical patterns on the bottom end of the cup. Rock crystal was a symbol of purity and was highly treasured by Chinese people, in the same way they treasured jade and other precious hard stones.
