The gracefully curving handle with cross bar terminal and deeply sunk wick hole in this unusually large lamp suggest that is was meant to be carried, perhaps in a religious procession. Certainly, a lamp of this magnificent size would have been used to cast a glow over a large area like a temple or a basilica. Though it is a functional object, its linear elegance and beautiful patina carry it into the realm of art.
