As we hold such a vessel in our hands today, resting our fingers where those of others lingered centuries ago, we communicate directly with the classical past. We can never know who held this cup then, their station in life, or what their dreams were. Yet, we somehow sense their presence on the surface of the cup. As we grasp the handles and tip the vessel in our direction, we are surely echoing that forgotten individual. Through our imagination we can be in touch with a vanished world.
