hammered and raised bronze or copper sheet with engraved decoration.
The globular body rests on a splayed foot, the neck is short and vertical and terminates in a rolled rim; the domical lid has a large knob finial. The neck carries and epigraphic band written in Kufic style over scrollwork, below it a narrow leafy scroll surrounds the neck’s base. The lid is alternately decorated by short vertical panels with concave endings and almond- shaped large medallions. The panels depict running animals over a scroll ground, whil the medallions are decorated by blossoming flowers. The entire vessel is covered with green corrosion.
Comparative material: the best known lidded bowl is the British Museum’s richly decorated with silver inlaid Vaso Vescovali, which is attributed to Khorasan and date to c. 1200. Cf. Rachel Ward, op.cit., figs.10 and 57. Another, richly decorated lidded bowl is in the Museum of Geneva, cf. Geneva, 1985, cat.no.270, p.263.
