Reduced to elemental anatomical form, this beige and red figure still projects a singular grace. As with the artwork of a child, we are aware of spontaneity, freshness for observation. The artist sees the same things we see, but he has made them a little less familiar, so that we take nothing for granted. What is amazing about Chinesco figures like this one is that they manage to radiate very tangible human warmth, even though they show the minimum of anatomy? With his hands disappearing into his pockets, it only adds to the human touch and feeling involved in such a beautiful piece. However, we cannot forget the importance such apiece would have had in a tribal setting. Every sculptural piece made was of great importance to the artist and this charming piece was of no exception.
