The taking of trophy heads in battle seems to have been an important ritual that completed the cycle of agricultural fertility. Such conquests were designed to please the gods and so the Ancient Costa Ricans attempted to make sacrifices to them either of great size or of great value. This carved head evidently represents a valuable gift to the gods. The elaborate cap complete with a top knot indicates the importance of this person.
