When we look at artifacts from the past, we are enthralled by the variety, beauty and craftsmanship that went into the creation of these pieces. Yet on occasion we come across one particular piece, which shows such uniqueness, that we may become absolutely enamored by it, as well as curious about its possible function in society. This shallow deer vessel is such a piece that brings to the attention, its simplicity and elegance of shape and design. Created out of burnished red earthenware, it is molded carefully, creating no rough edges, but instead, smooth unity. The vessel is low and oval shaped, with the legs of the deer supporting it. The head of the deer acts as an added form of stability, but also shows the deer in a grazing position. The artist paid attention to detail on the face; carefully sculpting the horns and creating the large soulful eyes which deer are known for. However, the artist has not limited his decoration to the simple design of the deer coat but has added linear and circular motifs, which subtly bring out a texture to the vessel. Such ingenuity connects us emotionally with the past as we look at the realism that was created. In doing so, it enables us to appreciate the art of the past and to understand the past also.
