This globular vessel with flared pedestal foot is painted in orange, deep auburn and black. The eyes, mouth, nose and ears have been molded. The features are simplified. Black lines denote eyebrows; eyes are simple teardrops with large black pupils. The earspools are plain, orange circles. The mouth grabs our attention. It reveals long fangs under thick growling lips. The expression is not as gruesome as the artist may have intended, there is rather a sweet quality concerning this face. The top and bottom borders are filled with intricately painted elements of various motifs, the principal being a row of stylized jaguars silhouetted in black against the white ground. The other bands contain symbolic elements which may be jaguar related. Below the mouth rim, there is a row of hook designs. This vessel may have served an important function during shaman rituals. The artistic ingenuity and beautiful shape of this vessel makes it a masterpiece of well-developed skill and remarkable creativity.
