Victorian classical revival gold pendant in the roman style reproducing the coinage of the Emperor Aurelian.
In 19th century Europe, skilled goldsmiths recreated exact replicas of jewelry from the classical world. Virtually indistinguishable from the originals on which they were based, these ornaments in the antique style were popular among the learned aristocracy. Such a jewel proclaimed a link with the glories of the classical past; when coins set in gold were a mark of political allegiance. This splendid pendant has at its center a copy after an Aureus of the emperor Aurelian, who reigned between A.D. 270-275. Bold and delicate by turns, it evokes a timeless aura of power, luxury, and grandeur. In our age as in any other, these qualities are unmistakable.
