This is a gilt-bronze seated sculpture of the Buddha Shakyamuni. The Buddha rests on a lotus posture, and his hands are in bhumisparsa and dhyana mudra respectively. The Buddha has a soothing smile on his face, creating a serene and approachable aura. The Buddha's robe is depicted with an extraordinary attention to details. The ushnisha of the sculpture still bears visible marks of its original blue hue. In principle, the Bhumisparsa mudra is a gesture reserved for the Buddha Shakyamuni. According to the life story of the Buddha, the demon Mara questions the Buddha’s enlightenment, saying that nobody was there to witness the process. The Buddha, with his right hand touching the ground, proclaims that the Earth stands witness to his enlightenment, and defeats Mara in the process.
