The Bamileke populate the grassland regions of Cameroon. Every year they hold a feast which is supposed to guarantee the fertility of the fields, as well as of the males of the tribe. This buffalo mask, with large almond eyes, prominent teeth and nostrils, is typical of those worn during these celebrations. Carved from a single piece of wood, it radiates a masculine force which seems very ancient. Since the dawn of human civilization, man has worshiped the strength and vitality of horned bulls, and this mask fits easily into that tradition. It exudes an aura of magic which is as old as civilization itself.
